Several weeks ago, I noticed an increase in foot traffic in downtown Apex. But something was different with these people, they were on a mission; kind of serious and focused. I mentioned it to my co-horts in baking while we were all working away in the bakery and they just looked at me like I was…out of it. “ Everyone is playing Pokémon-Go!”
“Playing who? Poke what?”
After a lot of being shamed for not knowing all about the biggest thing to hit cell phones since the sim card, I got a crash course in all things Pokémon- Go. You might have seen a bunch of women in striped aprons running up and down Salem street with our phones out one morning, that was me being schooled in Pokémon-Go.
So naturally someone suggested we make Pokéball cookies. Tara, who is the Queen of all things cookies made a couple of dozen just to amuse us. When she came in the next day, we had to tell her they were all gone and she needed to get busy.
So the Pokémon-Go craze had officially taken us over.
Sure we watched with amusement as people walked into the pillar outside our front door, and bounced off it without looking up from their phones. We started carefully looking both ways before we went out the back door with the garbage, lest we be swept up in a herd of Pokémon-zombies and we became super experts at Pokéball cookies……and cakes.
Then one day, someone asked for an actual Pokéball cake. Now we were talking! After, a little research (bless you, youtube) we had our first Pokéball cake. We have had so much fun creating Pokéball cupcakes, cookies and now adding the cake to our repertoire. We thought you might be interested in how it is made so here are some photos of the cake in process.
How to Make a Pokémon Go Cake
We started with 1/2 cake and 1/2 Rice Krispies treats
Then we covered both halves with buttercream and chilled them
We put them together and added another layer of buttercream
Then we iced the top half with red buttercream and the bottom half in white, vanilla buttercream
Cut out the black and white elements in fondant.
